I have collected them for a long time and have about 250 in my collection. 
Still I do not know that much about them other than I love'em.
They come in 3 basic styles:
Cigar Box - colored plastic with either rubber or plastic tires, these came in minature "Cigar Boxes"
Speedline - metalized plastic with either rubber or plastic tires, these came on blister cars
"Cheapie" - the final style which is very cheaply made and do not have windows or metal bases, these came on blister cards
Some of the plastic tires have silver paint spokes

There are track sets and accessories too plus carry cases and display boxes

There is also a gift pack which included 12 cars which I have had a few of but there is also a giant gift pack that had I think 24 cars.  I saw that style only once and would really like to get one someday.
